Fleetwood is a town within the Wyre district of Lancashire, England, lying at the northwest corner of the Fylde. It has a population of 26,840 people as of the 2001 Census. It forms part of the Greater Blackpool conurbation. The town was the first planned community of the Victorian era. For most of the twentieth century, Fleetwood was a prominent deep-sea fishing port, but, since the 1970s, the fishing industry has declined precipitously and the town has undergone economic difficulties. Fleetwood is also a seaside resort, serving as a quiet contrast to nearby Blackpool.
Port of Fleetwood is owned and operated by Britain's largest ports group, Associated British Ports, and boasts a modern terminal offering one of the most important Irish Sea shipping facilities serving Northern Ireland. Port of Fleetwood has recently gone through considerable redevelopment. Fleetwood Harbour Village, a major retail shopping and entertainment outlet, has been built on an area of land around Wyre Dock, adjacent to Freeport Fleetwood shopping and leisure complex.
Fleetwood is a popular seaside resort and houses a traditional pier, a beautiful marina for yachts and a busy promenade. Fleetwood is also known for being home to the world famous "Fisherman's Friend" lozenges. It has the only original main street tramway in Britain and Fleetwood’s lighthouse was built in the middle of the road.
